Still a Success
Written by Antrel Rolle / January 26, 2010
I wish I could say for sure what went wrong against the Saints, but I was only in for one series before I got hurt. I hit my head on Reggie Bush's knee and didn't return to the game. We had a lot of guys hurt going into the game, so I think it would have turned out different had we been 100 percent healthy. It's hard to overcome injuries to key players and we played like 16 weeks in a row because of our early bye.
Obviously we wish we had a chance to keep playing, but looking back this season has to be considered a success. We had one of the best years this franchise has had since the ’70s and I don't think it's ever had back-to-back years like this before. Getting to the playoffs and winning a game is a successful season, even though we fell short of our ultimate goal.
Next year could be real different depending on what happens this offseason. Because of concussion concerns a lot of people think that Kurt might not come back even though he's playing as well as ever. If he doesn't come back it would be real strange around here. He's a great guy, but he has to make a decision that's best for him and his family.
Judging from conversations that I've had with him I think he understands that he's had a great, Hall of Fame career. I think football has taken its course. But he's the best teammate I've ever had. He's been a leader on and off the field.
Now that the Saints are in the Super Bowl I will be hanging around Miami to play in the Pro Bowl next week. I was an alternate to begin with, but now that Darren Sharper is in the Super Bowl I'm a Pro Bowler. After that I think I'll just want to kick back and relax. I have a contract situation taking place which hopefully will resolve itself quickly.
I kind of like having the Pro Bowl after the Super Bowl, but we'll see how it goes this year with the change. It's great to be a part of it regardless.

Monday Night Rematch
Written by Antrel Rolle / December 10, 2009
We've played two games since my last blog. One was a tough loss at the end and one was a big win. Against the Titans Vince Young came up big. He showed why he was the #3 pick in the draft. He has had his ups and downs but he looks like he's developing into a really good quarterback. I was about a foot away from picking off three different passes on the last drive which was really frustrating.
In our win against the Vikings we were able to hold Adrian Peterson to 19 yards rushing. That's huge because I think he's the best back in the game. Our defensive line did a great job beating their O-line all game and allowed us to make tackles.
We had Kurt back last game and he picked apart the Vikings' secondary all game long. With Anquan back at full strength we have the best 1-2 receiver tandem in the league. I call Anquan a beast among men because he has that mindset that he can't be stopped. Together with Larry and Steve Breaston we have a dynamic receiving corps.
In week 1 we lost a game to the 49ers that we feel we should have won, so it will be important to go into SF and take this one. They lost a tough game last week, but they are not a team that is gonna lay down for us. It will be a fight like it always is against them. The fact that it's a Monday night game adds a little flavor because you know everybody is watching you, but we have to treat it like just another game.

Making Plays
Written by Antrel Rolle / Noviembre 25, 2009
With Kurt getting banged up in our game against the Rams last week it was really beneficial for us to get out to a decent lead early on. It makes the job of the defense a lot easier, but at the same time we know that we're gonna get their offense's best shot and that they're going to do all that they can to get back into it.
The biggest thing for us right now is to not get complacent with our recent success. We're 6-1 over our last seven games, but no one is looking ahead. Our focus right now is on the Titans, who are a completely different team than the one that started 0-6. They went 13-3 last year and you don't just become bad overnight. I think they have come together and found a way to win games as a team. I expect them to give us their best game and I know it's not gonna be easy to go in there and get a win.
We know we have to try to slow down Chris Johnson. If he's not the best back in the league right now then he's way up there near the top. He's just outstanding. He plays really mature despite the fact that it's just his second year in the league. I don't know him too well personally, but he seems like he's real humble and goes about things the right way. He's carrying that team on his back right now and it's up to us to run to the ball and take good angles when he has it. You can never assume he's down because he's real shifty and you won't catch him from behind.
The defense will have to try to force Vince Young to beat us throwing the ball. That's not to say that he can't, but we have to make sure Johnson doesn't go wherever he wants all day. We need to keep making plays when the opportunities present themselves and we should continue to be successful.
As far as Thanksgiving goes it will be a quiet one for me here in Arizona. My family comes to all my games from Miami so for them to go to Arizona then Tennessee from there it would just be too much travel.

Searching for Consistency
Written by Antrel Rolle / Noviembre 12, 2009
We knew going into the game with the Bears that they were gonna throw the ball a lot, but our offense made it so they had pretty much no choice. We were up 34-7 at the half so we knew what they had to do in the second half.
The offense was huge for us in the game with Kurt throwing 5 touchdowns to four different guys, but we still need to find a way to become more consistent on both sides of the ball. We're just not clicking with any consistency yet. Hopefully we can get Anquan back this week and he can help get us rolling towards that consistency.
Hightower and Wells are really starting to jell and run tough for us. The more opportunities they get the more efficient they are becoming. They're both young guys so they make each other better.
We're 1-3 at home so far this year and there is no excuse for that. It's just how the cards have been dealt so far. We know that we can't continue to lose games at home, so we just have to try and get to 5-3 starting with the Seahawks at home on Sunday.
They are always a tough matchup and obviously it's a big game because it's in our division. We need to get ready to play physical and try to dominate them on both offense and defense.
I'm gonna watch the 49ers game tonight so I can get a live action look at them before our second game against them. When I watch football I don't watch as a fan, I watch it like I'm breaking down film. You never know who you're gonna face in this league, so the more looks you can get at a team's tendencies the better.
We know we have to win at home, but we just need to win period so we can get to the playoffs and take it from there.

In Our Hands
Written by Antrel Rolle / October 29, 2009
It feels great to win our third game in a row after starting out 1-2 on the season. Our bye week came right before our win streak but I don't think it has much to do with that. It was a time to gather ourselves and rest a little bit for anyone who was banged up, but I think it just comes down to improved play on both sides of the ball.
Guys are really understanding all the concepts on defense and we have a lot of confidence that we can go out there and win every Sunday. Our coaches have a lot of confidence in us and they expect us to win. That makes us feel like we need to expect ourselves to win too. The defense has been doing a good job of flying to the ball the last three games and the offense has helped us out by putting together long drives to score points and keep us off the field.
It felt great to put a stamp on the game with my interception last in the fourth quarter. We were very nicked up on defense in that game and I think we're down four guys right now on D. We came together to make it work and it was amazing to make the play that pretty much ended the game. The Giants couldn't do anything to change the momentum after that.
The win in New York was huge because it shows people that just because past Cardinals teams weren't great playing back East, this is the 2009 Cardinals. Teams know that when we come to their place that we are going to be a tough opponent and that we can win anywhere.
We got the Panthers this Sunday and despite their 2-4 record I think they're still a great team. I don't think the record indicates just how dangerous they really are. We are going to have to stop their great running game behind DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, plus they have weapons at receiver like Steve Smith. If we can stop those guys we will have the game in our hands.
I'm happy that we're playing well and on a win streak because I don't want to have to rely on another late season charge like last year. We're in a better place right now than we were three weeks ago, but we know that come Sunday it's time to play ball. Nobody is going to let us have anything.

Complete Game
Written by Antrel Rolle / October 22, 2009
I think our game last week against the Seahawks was our first complete game of the season. The win over Houston was a big game, but we didn't play well the whole game. I guess the fact that we won is all that matters, but still we wanted to have a game where we played a solid four quarters.
Our offense jumped out on top and kept the defense off the field. When your offense takes up 11 minutes of the quarter, that's pretty much perfection. Their time of possession allowed the defense to stay fresh and we played disciplined all game long. I think we only made like three mental errors the whole game. We were flying all over the field and making plays.
We're getting close to where we want to be as a team. Now all we have to do is try to stay consistent. If we can get a few games under our belt where we play like we did against Seattle then we'll be there. Our confidence has been really high in practice so that's also a plus.
We have the Giants next and they pose a big challenge for us as a defense. They have a lot of weapons and a great quarterback. They are very disciplined and they don't make mistakes. They wait for you to make a mistake and then jump on you. I think their offense is more dangerous now than it was with Burress because now they have five or six guys who can kill you instead of maybe three in the past.
Their young receivers have been making big plays all year so far and they have good chemistry with Eli. He's putting the ball up and they're coming down with it most of the time. I think they understand each other's strengths and that makes them really dangerous.

The Fans Deserve Better
Written by Antrel Rolle / October 3, 2009
There's no other way to put it, the Colts beat us bad last week. Peyton Manning is great but he went off because of our mental letdowns on defense. If you give him a chance to beat you he's going to beat you and that's what we did all day. We had a great gameplan going in, we just didn't execute it. As a team we beat ourselves all day.
Luckily it's just the third game in, so we can't get down on ourselves. But we can't just expect last year to happen again. We can't wait til the end and just assume everything will click. I am not confident that we can do that again. When it happened last year I was surprised because everything suddenly started going right.
The fans were booing at times during the game and I understand why. We didn't give them a reason to cheer. We need to play better for them and for ourselves.
I don't see anything that needs to drastically change except for our protection of our quarterback. He's not the most mobile guy back there, but if he gets time he can pick any defense apart. The Colts defense is good, but we made them look like all-stars out there. We turned it over in the red zone and you can't do that. We have to come away with at least three when we get the ball down that far.
I'm not trying to lose any more games, because last year is last year. After our bye we get the Texans. We get paid a lot of money and we need to show that we earn what we get next time out. We can't get beat like we did last week.

Putting on a Show
Written by Antrel Rolle / September 23, 2009
It's always good to be back in Florida, especially when we got a win on the road. It was also great to get a win on the East Coast because we don't usually have a lot of success out there.
The touchdown I scored on the blocked field goal was all set up by my teammates. I just happened to be in the right place. Gabe Watson saw something that could get Calais Campbell through the line and he worked it to perfection. When I saw the ball in the air I knew I could take it all the way.
It means everything to come back and get a win after our loss in week 1. We didn't really struggle against the 49ers, we just didn't win. We were in it the whole way and just came up short in the end.
The offense came up huge for us Sunday too. It's always great to have Kurt Warner as a teammate. Watching him pick apart the Jacksonville defense was just awesome. I was thankful because he kept our defense off the field. It was hot and really humid that day. I'm from there so I'm used to it, but that day it was getting the better of me. I am a big fan of our offense putting together long drives.
I banged up my knee on the second play of the game, so I was extra thankful to be off the field as much as possible. I was gonna play as long as I wasn't hurting the team and was able to fight through it.
We got the Colts up next on Sunday night. It's going to be a really good test for our defense to go against an offense that is run to perfection like Indy's. Everyone in that offense has their marks down pat. It's just like any other game, even though we know there's a lot of anticipation because it's a nationally televised game.
I look forward to playing against Peyton. If I can play well against him I know I can play well against anyone.

Not the Ring I Want
Written by Antrel Rolle / September 11, 2009
It was good to go out and actually play on Thursday night. We all have so much pent up energy after not being able to hit anyone at practice for the last three weeks that it's good to get to release some frustration on another team.
I got a chance to return punts last night but I forgot about it until game time. I always put some real thick Japanese Cherry Blossom lotion on my arms because it keeps me warm and loose during games. I do it before every game but I forgot that I was returning punts on Thursday. I caught the punt perfectly, but as soon as I tucked it away I felt it start to slip. Then someone hit me from behind and it just slipped out.
After the starters got taken out some of the guys had a dance-off on the sidelines. Bryant McFadden started it and pretty soon a bunch of guys were dancing around. It eventually turned into a competition between me, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and McFadden versus Ike Taylor and William Gay of the Steelers. It lasted about two quarters. It was fun to joke around and have some fun after being locked up the last three weeks.
Seeing the black and gold brought back a lot of memories of Super Bowl XLIII. We know that when we see those guys that it will be a battle. I don't think I've ever played a game against them that didn't go down to the wire.
I was really impressed with some of the young guys like Greg Toler and Michael Adams in the secondary. Adams was impressive making open field tackles and has a good approach to the game. Greg always tells me to watch him and give him any advice on how to do certain things. I thought Tyler Palko played real well too. He reminded me of the old Jeff Garcia out there. Ali Highsmith looked good too.
The chemistry of this team has grown significantly during camp. We always play a lot of cards together and tell stories and joke around. The other night we had Greg Toler and Rashad Johnson come up and clean the room of pizza boxes and everything after our card game ended. Other than that we aren't doing much in the way of rookie hazing.
The Miami-Florida State game is coming up on September 7th and me and Darnell Dockett always have a bet on it. Whoever loses has to wear the other guy's jersey for a week. If Miami wins he has to wear my tight #6 jersey and if Florida State wins I have to wear his huge #45. I hope the Canes pull it out because he will look ridiculous in my jersey. It won't fit him at all.
Our next game is next Saturday against the Chargers at home. Practice might change a little bit after the first game because now everybody knows what it's going to be like on Sundays. In games you can't stop a play because you do something wrong. There's no margin for error.

Feeling Minnesota
Written by Antrel Rolle / July 10, 2009
I'm pretty much done with vacationing and all that offseason stuff. I've been working hard getting ready for the season.
Right now I'm in Minneapolis working out with Larry Fitzgerald, getting some work in before training camp. Today we did a lot of agility stuff, working on vertical movement at the Velocity training facility. We broke out the parachute and did some sprints. I ran three 300-yard shuttles today too. Today was all about working on explosive movement. There were a bunch of other NFL guys here too. Jerry Rice, Brandon Marshall, Greg Jennings and Michael Clayton were all here doing their thing.
I'm getting ready to head back home to Miami for a couple days. I might hit the beach and kick back. I need to recuperate a little bit. My body is pretty sore from working out. I'm going to continue to train all the way up until we report to Flagstaff on the 29th. I think I'll take a couple days off before camp starts just to rest up.
Life in camp can get pretty mundane. We're basically locked up together for days. But it's cool. It's constant work, constant meetings and seminars. It gets pretty boring, but it helps us get along better as a team because we all do it together. There is no doubt that it is a huge chemistry builder. We all help each other out in whatever ways we can during camp because we all need it.
We do the same thing every day and it gets a little mind-boggling with all the information coming at you, but at night after practice there are a lot of card games and guys playing PlayStation together.
Unfortunately I have to talk about something that completely shocked me this week. I was doing a camp in Arizona when my friend texted me and told me that Steve McNair died. I didn't have any of the information on it at the time so I was like, Michael Jackson and now Steve McNair? It was crazy. It just sucks. No one should be taken that young, especially in that way. It's so infuriating that he had to go like that. It was an absolute shock to me. He leaves behind a great legacy, though.

The road back...
Written by Antrel Rolle / June 15, 2009
It's good to be back in a football mindset after the offseason. It felt really good to see all my teammates again. I'm still so proud of how we responded to everything to get to the Super Bowl.
I think I handled the situation leading up to the Super Bowl pretty well. I tried not to let myself get overwhelmed by the situation and just focus on what was going to be the biggest game of my life. I kept my routines the same. Now that I've been there I know what to expect.
I think we proved a lot to the doubters last year. Fluke teams don't make it to the Super Bowl, but if we need to prove ourselves again then we will. But I feel that we're here to prove to ourselves that we're a good football team. Having a good regular season and hopefully going into the playoffs with a winning record is our goal.
After the season I took about a month off to rest and heal up a bit. In mid-March I started to get my running and weights in. After a few weeks I was pretty much back in football shape.
OTAs ended on June 11th and I was really impressed with the effort that the new guys were showing out there. I have never seen such high competition like that in OTAs before. Every player was going after it full speed every play.
Rookie CB Greg Toler has impressed me a lot too. He has great potential. I think he had five interceptions in OTAs which is a lot for a rookie. We sit down and talk all the time. I have told him how to defend certain passes and things, but he has exceptional athleticism, explosive speed, good ball skills and he is eager to learn.
We're looking forward to getting Anquan Boldin and Darnell Dockett back on the field in a Cardinals uniform because they're two of our top guys. We couldn't have made it to the Super Bowl without them, no doubt. We need them back. I'm not saying I agree or disagree with what they're doing. I just know they're doing what they think they need to do.
We report to training camp on July 29th. I dread going to training camp but only because it forces me to be away from friends and family. It wears on your body and mind after a while, but it's necessary.
We intend to prove that there is no such thing as a fluke Super Bowl team.
